Girolata: The Village Accessible Only by Sea

A Timeless Village Between Sea and Mountains

Nestled along Corsica’s wild west coast, between the red cliffs of Scandola and the untamed maquis, Girolata feels completely cut off from the world.

Here, there are no roads.

The village can only be reached:

  • by sea,
  • or after several hours of hiking along the famous “postman’s trail”.

That is exactly what makes Girolata so unique.

A simple and preserved place where time seems to slow down.

Year-round, only around twenty people still live in the village, following the rhythm of the sea and the seasons.

Where Is Girolata?

Girolata is located between Calvi and Porto, on the edge of the Gulf of Girolata, very close to the Scandola Nature Reserve.

Surrounded by mountains and Corsican maquis, this small fishing village is one of the island’s most iconic places.

From the sea, arriving in Girolata is truly spectacular:
colorful houses, a peaceful beach, a Genoese fort and crystal-clear waters create an almost unreal setting.

Why Is Girolata Accessible Only by Sea?

No road leads directly to the village.

For a long time, Girolata remained completely isolated from the rest of Corsica.

Even today, the main access remains by boat.

There is a hiking trail connecting the village to the nearest road, but it takes several hours on foot to reach Girolata.

This absence of roads has allowed the village to preserve its authenticity and peaceful atmosphere.

How to Visit Girolata from Calvi?

The best way to discover Girolata is by boat excursion from Calvi.

The journey follows a spectacular coastline:

  • the Gulf of Calvi,
  • the Revellata peninsula,
  • wild cliffs,
  • the Scandola Nature Reserve,
  • before reaching the Gulf of Girolata.

Arriving by sea is part of the experience itself.

The village gradually appears, hidden between the mountains and the Mediterranean.

Overlooking the village, the Genoese fort reminds visitors of Corsica’s maritime history.

The fort itself cannot be visited inside, but the path leading above the village offers magnificent views over the gulf, the village and the surrounding mountains.

Can You Stay Overnight in Girolata?

Yes.

A few accommodations allow visitors to spend the night in the village, in an atmosphere completely different from the rest of tourist Corsica.

In the evening, once the boats have left, Girolata becomes incredibly peaceful.
